The purpose of this project is to promote agroecological farming/gardening practices within communities that are in the region encompassing San Martin, Guatemala. In particular, it is the goal of the project to promote agroecology by using the Campesino-a-Campesino methodology. We, at Pax Natura Foundation and Charity Seeds, recognize the fact that agroecological cultivation practices hold the potential to reduce the negative effects of climate change by sequestering carbon and creating more resilient crops, ameliorate global hunger by providing culturally appropriate foods at little or no cost to growers, promote biodiversity by increasing the quality and quantity of plant and soil life within agroecoscapes, and aid in the promotion of a more egalitarian society by providing alternative revenue streams for growers.
By using the Campesino-a-Campesino methodology, Moises Lopez will begin by seeking out and building connections with communities of people who are interested in growing produce agroecologically. Once the community has been determined, Moises will help facilitate the creation of agroecological gardens on small farms within said communities. In particular, the youth of the communities will be engaged in the construction and creation of the gardens for the benefit of future generations.
