The Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio), is a non-governmental organization first commissioned by the Costa Rican government to establish the biodiversity inventory for Costa Rica.

As part of its mission, INBio generates knowledge of biodiversity though inventory information management, social outreach and conservations programs. INBio is unique in its target efforts to communicate and promote utilization of the knowledge it generates while seeking to contribute to the development of Costa Rican society from a spiritual, social and economic perspective in harmony with nature.

In 1998 the Pax Natura Foundation donated the rainforest property “Bosque Lluvioso Rio Costa Rica” to the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio) in Costa Rica for $1.00. This gift of hundreds of hectares of rainforest lands helped INBio train para-taxonomists to go out into the forest to collect every biological species in the country and create the world’s first Biodiversity Inventory for an entire nation. The Pax Natura Foundation became the principle financial supporter of the Bosque Lluvioso and a major contributor to INBio. Pax Natura Foundation in partnership with Amazon.com directes the proceeds from the sale of the education materials developed from the inventory to INBio in Costa Rica .
